The A-1 aircraft was specifically designed as a temporary solution to replace the aging A-4 models used by the U.S. Marine Corps. The first production version took to the skies in April 1970. Equipped with the robust J52-P-408A engine, this aircraft offered enhanced ordnance capacity, making it a significant upgrade over its predecessor.

Visually, the A-1 could easily be distinguished from the older A-4, primarily due to its squared-off rudder design. Additionally, later models incorporated a rudder-mounted RHAWS (Radar Homing and Warning System) for improved situational awareness.

For model enthusiasts, there are decal options available for notable squadrons, including the VMA-331 "Bumble Bees" from September 1976 and the VMA-214 "Black Sheep" based out of Iwakuni AB in 1977. This model kit caters to skill level 3 and consists of 146 pieces. It measures 10.1 inches (256.5 mm) in length and 7 inches (177 mm) in width, making it suitable for ages 14 and above.
